Underlining Titles Revisited

Recently, someone left a comment on my post “Titles: When to Italicize, Underline, or Use Quotation Marks” asking about what to do in cases where italicizing a title is impossible, as in the case of Facebook posts.

When writing in a text box where an editing menu (pictured above) is absent and you are unable to embed html code directly, you can still let your reader know what text needs to be underlined or italicized by using some character insertion.

  • To indicate that text needs to be underlined, surround the text with underline dashes (Shift + dash key):   _Dan, A Man Without Youth_
  • To indicate that text needs to be italicized, surround the text with right-slashes (i.e., / ): /Dan, a Man Without Youth/

Because I find right-slashes to be too easily confused with italic “I”s, I prefer to use the underlining method when I have to resort to indicating my punctuation textually.  Use whichever method you prefer. Thanks, Anonymous commenter, for bringing this question to my attention!

If you’re interested, I went back and added to my original blog post in case anyone else stumbles across that post with the same question. Feel free to take a look and let me know if I left anything out!
